When comparing two magazines, the best way is to look target audience's psychographics therefore it is obvious to identify the ideology of the two magazines by looking at the mise en scene. The 'Hanson' magazine is a conventional music magazine because it has iconic mise en scheme- 'The Smiths' being iconic to music. And the 'United' magazine has iconic mise en scene of conventions subjects you would find in college.
The target audience can relate to both magazines because they both use a good use of photography. And therefore in photoshop I enhanced both images so that the audience identify that there is an element of photography and imaging. This comes under the psychographics for hobbies. Both have the same ideology aswell because with Hanson, the genre of music leads people in. Same with 'United'. 'United' being a college magazine, this provides the unity of students bringing them together representing the college.
It is slightly that the photoshop has enhanced from 'United' to 'Hanson' in structure and graphics. In 'Hanson' boxes help separate the graphics making them easier to read and understand. With 'United' text is placed in different section with viewers might find confusing.
Writing skills have improved, the english skills on 'Hanson' are more expressive and lead the audience in more 'The band that changed history'.
Having done the preliminary task before achieving the main project is beneficial because it gives us a approach to photoshop and the production of magazine, it helped us analyse magazines and helps us understand the representation of the industry.
Photoshop improvements
There are photoshop improvements on 'Hanson' that aren't on 'United'
- The first technique used in photoshop are imaging adjustments. The first adjustment was the lighting. Having an image needing light for textual analysis is used for images that are represented from music. The image represents 'The Smiths'. The style of 'The Smiths' is a dark themed scene, having this lighting on the dark scene represents that it's not always negative (darkness connoting negative). Another adjustment in changing the contrast, the contrast can change the mood of the image, and can also sharpen the image.
- More graphics- these graphics include the boxes, the boxes separate the text. The boxes also look professional and are on convention music magazines. Having graphics that are convention to other music magazines can connote the production being more professional. By doing this I used the line tool.
- Rulers- For the main task 'Hanson' I used the ruler tool. The ruler tool helps in having exact measurements, therefore this writing and columns are positioned equally. This helps the magazine to look tidy and professional.
- Enlarging the image- The main image 'Hanson' had objects in the mise en scene that would distract the audience, and some viewers would find this irritating. For the 'United' magazine I took the image in a white drop back therefore there was just the character. Although shooting in a different setting can have different mise en scene. I enlarged the image to get rid of this object which was the hingers on the door.
