When comparing two magazines, the best way is to look target audience's psychographics therefore it is obvious to identify the ideology of the two magazines by looking at the mise en scene. The 'Hanson' magazine is a conventional music magazine because it has iconic mise en scheme- 'The Smiths' being iconic to music. And the 'United' magazine has iconic mise en scene of conventions subjects you would find in college.
The target audience can relate to both magazines because they both use a good use of photography. And therefore in photoshop I enhanced both images so that the audience identify that there is an element of photography and imaging. This comes under the psychographics for hobbies. Both have the same ideology aswell because with Hanson, the genre of music leads people in. Same with 'United'. 'United' being a college magazine, this provides the unity of students bringing them together representing the college.
It is slightly that the photoshop has enhanced from 'United' to 'Hanson' in structure and graphics. In 'Hanson' boxes help separate the graphics making them easier to read and understand. With 'United' text is placed in different section with viewers might find confusing.
Writing skills have improved, the english skills on 'Hanson' are more expressive and lead the audience in more 'The band that changed history'.

Having done the preliminary task before achieving the main project is beneficial because it gives us a approach to photoshop and the production of magazine, it helped us analyse magazines and helps us understand the representation of the industry.

Photoshop improvements
There are photoshop improvements on 'Hanson' that aren't on 'United'
  • The first technique used in photoshop are imaging adjustments. The first adjustment was the lighting. Having an image needing light for textual analysis is used for images that are represented from music. The image represents 'The Smiths'. The style of 'The Smiths' is a dark themed scene, having this lighting on the dark scene represents that it's not always negative (darkness connoting negative). Another adjustment in changing the contrast, the contrast can change the mood of the image, and can also sharpen the image.
  • More graphics- these graphics include the boxes, the boxes separate the text. The boxes also look professional and are on convention music magazines. Having graphics that are convention to other music magazines can connote the production being more professional. By doing this I used the line tool.
  • Rulers- For the main task 'Hanson' I used the ruler tool. The ruler tool helps in having exact measurements, therefore this writing and columns are positioned equally. This helps the magazine to look tidy and professional.
  • Enlarging the image- The main image 'Hanson' had objects in the mise en scene that would distract the audience, and some viewers would find this irritating. For the 'United' magazine I took the image in a white drop back therefore there was just the character. Although shooting in a different setting can have different mise en scene. I enlarged the image to get rid of this object which was the hingers on the door.

Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Before I discovered the content of my magazine, it's extremely helpful to find the target audience
before, and this is what helped me.

This character represents my magazine and the genre of music most. He is positioned with a guitar, therefore the character represents acoustic music. Acoustic music is conventional to peacefulness. And also acoustic music is created naturally. This is usually mainstream. The adolescent generation stereotypically listen to music with electronic based music. Overall acoustic is suitable for the older generation, but also the adolescent can listen as well. The mise en scene in the image is conventional to a pub, hence the little stage. The music I'm publishing in my magazine isn't well popular, and to some people the music is underrated. Usually music which is overrated becomes under chart music, which youngsters refer to find music which they would potentially enjoy. Therefore the older generation which I've targeted will find this 'new music' interesting and enjoyable. Now I will deconstruct an individual who fits in with the age and look, an individual character who represents the music.

The mans demographic profile is aged 21 which fits into my audience age (18-27). He is appealing to my music mainly because of his clothing.
This glasses connotes intellect. My music isn't too up beat and can be represented as 'chilled' music. The music is very thought through and ideologically has meaning. Therefore to achieve this music you need to be smart and identify the meaning of the music. This meaning is intertexual to classical music (The classical music all has meaning). The intellect fits in with this analysis which overall connotes the glasses.

His shirt connotes formally dressed. This also fits in with the genre of music because having The Smiths on the front cover, 'The Smiths' are usually formally dressed which represents their music. In their music they refer to politics. Politics connotes intelligence. 'The Smiths' usually dress formally when their playing live. The image of the individual is intertexual to 'The Smiths' because both dress formally but also their music represents meaning which therefore connotes to intelligence.
Although there is some informally meaning between the two images. Eventhough the two images look smart, conventions of being formally dressed are suits. In both images, the characters don't have their top button done up or shirt no entirely tucked in. This type of clothing can also represent some of the magazine's other music which is more upbeat. Overall the style and type of clothing can represent and can be intertexual to my music.

Gender
Some bands I'm publishing contain females. Also I said that females are in my target audience. For example the image containing the band 'Zero 7' contain a female. Adding this band to my magazine will be beneficial to females because they will understand that the genre of music I'm publishing will be suitable for them as well.

Films
One key film that I published on the front of my magazine is the film '500 Days of Summer'. This film represent the magazine and music highly. If people have watched the film and see that it's a headline on my magazine, they will immediately discover the genre of music. This is beneficial because its hard to realize the content and genre of music, having this film headline will be a 'back-up'. The soundtrack to this film ideologically represents my magazine, seeing familiar artists in my magazine which are included in the soundtrack of the film will help people understand the genre of the magazine as well.
The film has a very particular theme, which is summer-hence the title. But the refers to my magazine. Parts of my magazine consists of festivals. And festivals are conventionally in the summer. The film uses summer to defines their narrative. Therefore having a theme which is intertextual to this will come under the film's narrative.

Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

My magazine represents a unfamiliar stereotype, which overall makes my magazine hard to understand but also makes it hard to make viewers understand my content. Therefore, my magazine industry has a niche audience. I chose my audience to be niche because not a lot of people will understand it because it doesn't have typical conventions.
Therefore my magazine will be independently published. Having a magazine independently publish, you achieve all control in what you want to add to your content. Having this control, my magazine will specifically concentrate on style and music. This makes my magazine mainstream.
Although mainstream magazines have their limitations. On a campaign for mainstream magazine, it quoted that 'Sales across the sector were down by 5.2 per cent'.
A benefit of having independent publishing is that it initially costs less.
My distribution will be mostly online. The internet is one of the biggest mass media which contains millions of user, although the magazine will start on a low. However, with a subscription strategy, people will pay monthly to access my magazine, therefore receiving money. Having my magazine online reduces the numbers of publishing, therefore a high reduction in costs. Having more money, I will still refuse to have high industries publish my magazine, because of changing it's content.
I only have one specific location I want my magazine to be held. It will mainly be in stores such as WH Smith. Having a low publishing strategy, I must have some marketing awareness, therefore I'm choosing WH Smith. Without a good location, my magazine marketing would go downhill due to marketing awareness. Having WH Smith as my location would become a market ambush, mainly because of WH Smith's popularity.
Other stores I would like to have my magazines been held are stores which relate to my content intertexually. My magazine produces a special fashion that encourages the music I'm putting in my magazine. These stores will be for example American Apparel. Having magazines in clothing stores are unconventional, although, to spread my stereotype, it will be easier to have the magazines held in stores which relate to the magazine.
The distribution for the magazine cannot be exceedingly wide, because this effects my editorial Independence. This means that having wide publishes suggest changes. This is a limitation because, the publishes will make changes which will dramatically effect the magazines content. The location of this magazine will be placed online and in stores. This will make most audience awareness.
Synergy
Music television and Music award ceremonies, conventionally are sponsored by music magazines. But I believe that big publishes are involved with this, and therefore try their best to receive a bigger audience. Although having the magazine independently published, these opportunities will not come across. Music television for example Kerrang have a large audience, having my magazine advertised will highly increase the audience awareness. Although my genre doesn't have a specific outline, therefore finding a interextual music channel would be difficult.

Final Front cover

Final Contents Page

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

By deconstructing media, for example analyzing a music magazine, you would look for conventions. Conventions are very important in media productions because it notice's what structure has been used before. A convention can also be described as a common denotation. Music magazines with different genre have specific conventions, take 'Kerrang' for example. Kerrang's conventions have very ruggered text and the models always have an objective gaze. Some magazine have more conventions than other due to genre and structure. A conventional Magazine would it's title on the top of the front cover
and unconventional magazine would have the title in the middle frame or at the bottom. A conventional magazine would always have a model on the front cover, a unconventional magazine wouldn't have a modal at all.
Genre describes what audience is bein
g targeted while producing a magazine. Genre is similar to a stereotype- they both want to express their lifestyle. My magazine has a Indie/Rock genre. Having an indie genre is very unconventional for a magazine because it is hard to try and express it's content. Therefore I chose the band 'The Smiths' to express this because 'The Smiths' really connote a indie genre. Placing the headline 'The Smiths' middle frame in capitals, hopefully viewers will recognize this second (Title being first) and discover what genre this magazine is.
The magazine that influenced me first was the structure of the Karrang's structure and how it uses conventional graphics. The Kerrang magazines choose black boxes with a border and place text or images in them, mainly to stand out but personally it looks more professional. This because I added boxes to my front cover, but also my contents page.

This image is of a Kerrang magazine, as you can see the magazine provides boxes at the bottom introducing images or text. Being in boxes, this represents a new area on the page- away from all the other graphics. Which also connotes a sense of power- being on its own level. I also like a slim rectangle box at the bottom, this represents that not only there's everything center/top frame, there's always a little extra at the bottom which ideologically means this magazine front cover hardly end. Large head lines connote awareness which is good for target audiences. It does it's job in sucking viewers in and making them attached to the magazine.

This double page spread influences me, just because of its ideology. The ideology of this double page spread is freedom. A lot of conventional double page spreads have big spaces- due to what their expressing. Usually art and culture have big spaces if they were on a double page spread. Although stereotypical girl magazines for example Hello and OK magazines have double page spreads which are full, conventional to a newspaper.
